WHAT IS BOWEN THERAPY? Bowen Therapy is relevant for horse and rider as a team, or to help individual issues. It has been found to assist with musculo-skeletal conditions, chemical (hormonal) and emotional issues. Bowen Therapy is a hands-on complementary therapy that prompts the body to re-balance and do its own healing. It is not a manipulative therapy; there are no sudden high velocity movements or the use of equipment. As such it is usually pleasant to receive for both horses and people, and even when in great pain, they can be treated gently and effectively. |

| I will use mainly thumbs and fore-fingers to do “rolling” movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments, trigger points, acupressure points and lymphatic drainage sites. It is a whole-body treatment, therefore any secondary problems that are occurring, as a result of, for example, uneven gait, can be addressed at the same time. The treatment energises the body’s systems, in particular the lymphatic system, which enables the removal of dead cells and has a detoxifying effect. This enables healthy tissue to make the changes it needs to more rapidly. Often horses (and people) become quite warm during a treatment, as their blood circulation improves and the rebalancing process gets underway. This increase in body temperature has been shown in infra-red photographs before and after treatment. The image on the left (1) shows the horse pre-treatment with an area of poor blood circulation on his right hindquarters (indicated by the green area). Post Bowen treatment (image 2) the blood circulation has improved, indicated by the pink, red and yellow areas.
